Radio Runner
The product is a transistor radio, which can be used as running weights.
Shown here is the left grip of two grips, which make up the overall
product. I added a webbing support, the small tail which sits in-between
your thumb and index finger allowing a better support over you hand .The
LCD screen is basically hooiked up to a stop watch timer and pedometer
(Heat rate monitor, speed sensors were other exotic/unrealistic ideas
before – now scrapped). The orientation of the webbing support and the
LCD screen is hard to explain, by i did some running testing and this
orientation will allow you to view the screen whilst running as your
hands aren't pointed forwards but sit on an angle relative to your
running direction.See image for aall other functionalities.

SHE LOVES ME, SHE LOVES ME NOT
I pretty much revised the idea from my previous radio posting and played with the shape a little bit. The hardest thing for me was to fit the hexagonal shape within the dimensions we were given. I found it easy when the radio is closed but when it's open the petal covers would out stretch the limits. Thus the radio is quite small in this respect, If I can I would like to make the radio a little larger for greater emphasize and a larger speaker, important if your outdoors.
The petals are hinged from the base of the radio and don't get in the way of the user as the change stations. if you look within the radio the petals are flower petals (red) but if you look from the outside the petals are leaves (green) just for a bit of show and tell.
The on switch is opening the radio, and the off is closing the petals up to cover and protect the radio. Locking mechanism wise, I thought magnets contained within the petals would be the easiest solution and most efficient (less fiddly parts that could break).
A simple LCD, displaying the radio station and possibly the temperature but this would need another device impeded into the radio. Button operation to switch stations as a tuning knob was a bit to large in rotation (it would take a lot of space within the radio if i had a large circular knob).
I'm pretty happy with the overall form and the simplicity of it.
Peace and flower power to all you baby making hippies out there!

Radio Concept
Speakers on top. I imagined where the finger and thumb would be placed and took this into consideration when deciding where to place the volume buttons, a plus and minus are on the bottom half on each side near the tip. The placement of everything makes this radio easy to be controlled with one hand.

Revised Radio Concept
I designed this radio so that it can be placed in the middle of a room or something and it can project sound in all directions. I did this by facing the speaker up with an unpside down cone above it. And after almost failing YR12 physics, I think I am able to say that this should work, as the sound will bounce off the cone and go out in all directions. When one wants to change volume, they simply turn the cone on the top to the desired volume number, and then to change the station, the cone can be pushed down like a button and then one is able to tune it. I have yet to figure out how to show whether it is in volume or tuning mode, I may have to add a little screen or something.

revised radio concept
After going through ideas in the group discussion, i decided to stickwith this concept; the group decided it was the strongest.
They suggestedi play with the front a little and a few other things. So the radio now has a circular speaker on the front and the screen popsup using a spring latch release. The front panel and casing will be madeof metal, maybe stainless steel, and there will be a mesh type texture cut into it to sit infront of the speaker. i'm yet to fully look into how the latch will work but it'll be much like the way a tape deck pops out when you push it. i also found a coating for electronics that makes them splash proof called 'gloden shellback', so that takes care of the waterproofing issue. I haven't really taken the screen design into account because i'm hoping that a touch screen is a viable option, so they would just be computer graphics.I'd also like to make it thinner but i'll have to make sure the electronics will fit.
sorry the drawing isn't as good as it probably should be!- grace

Inspired by nature 2
the overall shape / form of the radio design can be seen as a type of jewelery.
the center control / knob can be lifted and rotated to change the channel , then pushed down to lock it in and rotate it again to change the volume.
to turn on / off the radio simply push the button underneath the radio (to turn it on as well as opening it.) or close it .

Concept revised
this is my revised concept. some of the feedback i got helped with developing this concept to what i have now. the knob on the top is to turn it on and then the volume. For the tune you push down the whole unit and twist to change. i thought this may be more accurate and easy to use than the previous idea although i think the angle on the bottom may cause a problem with the mechanics behind the tuning mechanism. comment away. thanks

Camping/Hiking Radio.
The idea is still surrounded by the environment and camping. I've added some extra features including an LED light around the base of the product that gives off a dim light (light travels far when camping) this light captures a different feature of the use of the radio being that you can hang it in the tent and have a central light along with the entertainment of the radio. i've also refined the shape of the radio and and functions. (see sketches) so yeah, any feedback anyone?
cheers.

Nothing really stands out yet. I'll sleep on it.

week 3 concept!
just posting up my chosen concept for this assignment.
the two 'members' on either side of the blue display slide up and down to adjust the volume and select stations respectively whilst the display gives more visual feedback.
I haven't decided on how to change between am/fm intuitively... (coming soon!)
the black grill at the bottom houses the speaker with two vents on either side to allow more clarity of sound.

Radio Concept Development
This concept of a revolving speaker for stationary use and a sleek and ergonomic design for portable use has been re-worked. The radio is designed to look stylish in any environment and offers an innovative way of altering the volume and frequency. The radio come with a threaded mount for stationary use, the mount is weighted at one end so as to keep radio perpendicular. The radio attaches to the mount via the thread on the inside of the volume control, This is when the revolving speaker comes into its own to offer an aesthetic appearance as well as providing a functional way of directing sound. I'm thinking of incorporating a click mechanism to turn the radio on and off instead of using a standard switch, maybe between the two pieces of the radio.

My Design
Main difference is that I've moved the LCD tuning screen from the top to the front of the unit, because I feel that this will make it easier for users to see, not only when tuning, but when the unit is being listened to.

week3 post
after the discussion in the class i decide to make my volume control by turning the top part of my radio.
and i was thinking to put another part in my radio like in the smallest sketc.
so all the channel tuning, fm/am button will be put there.

Star Desk Radio
this is the second week design...this concept pretty much just popped into my head. its clean and curved lines produce an elegant shape making it look sophisticated, fitting into an office work environment easily. being darker colours blends the ornamental radio into its environment. it would be made of a base plastic and or metal frame with elastic speaker material covering it to produce the overall shape. the ON/OFF button is red to stand out as the settings would generally stay the same in an office environment therefore wouldnt need to stand out. so yeh...get back to me on your thoughts because it could help greatly.

Handy Sites
Just added some handy web addresses to the side here >>>
Sorry they're not actual links (you'll need to copy/paste (grr to the
interface again)) but I hope they're handy and interesting.
If you have a suggestion for the list, blog it or tell me in class.
Instructables is my favourite site at the moment, heaps of instructions
of how to make things, from a knitted Dr.Who Tardis and your very own
Flux Capacitor (from Back to the Future) to wallets from old bike tyres
and cakes.
Check it out if you have some spare time.

Week 3 Concept
I have simplified the overall design a little and it now has a more unique organic flow which i think will make it easy to associate with then the more 'chunky' shape previously.
I was concerned about the process of modeling this out blue foam but i have tested out shaping the curves and grooves of the left side and it is shaping up well. Hopefully the notes on sketch will explain other features so i dont rattle on.

idea to pursue. The design is fun to play with (user friendly yay!)
and thus interactive. The problem of having a rotating display is
fixed here by adding a larger cube to the centre of the device that is
always facing the user. The volume display is the coloured light face;
starts witht he bottom right light blue and as you increse the volume
the colours light up around the face ending in the centre with a
vibrant red... perhaps a bit expensive with all the colours but i
thought it was a cool idea. Again, speakers are rotatable to face the
users desired direction.
