Foam "Radio Runners"

Hi guys, here's a couple of photos showing my "Radio Runner Grips", only made one, one image is photoshoped so it looks as if there's a pair. I turned down the body in my lathe as shown.

The handle is very thin for a good reason. To actually manipulate the controls of the partnering Grip you need some room for your fingers to open, close etc.
The platform on the top and tail is present for the radio's tunning and stop watch/pedometer capabilities . I could have simplified the whole top section by making a small multi-function digital screen but i wanted to make historic links to the first transistor radios that used manual dial bands and indicators. This model told me a lot of things in terms of ergonomics and the functionality. Controls which i assumed worked perfectly in my head, really turned out flawed in the foam but overall im happy with this mockup, now I need to tweak and rework a few things.

week 4

Hi, this is my model. I used hot electrical wire to cut the straight lines, which didn't go very well...I still need to work on it.

FOAM MOCK UP: CLICK RADIO

Hey guys this is a foam mock up model of my chosen concept for my clicking transistor radio. The speaker design was a bit too complex so i just pasted an image of the speaker itself (to scale) on the front. Basically the mock up is pretty spot on in terms of the buttons and functions. I drilled a hole through the main body once i'd turned it on the lathe and then cut it into two pieces inserting a nail through the middle which allows them to turn, as I had envisioned for my tuning. Pieces also slide apart for volume control. Ergonomically the model is very successful and fits in the palm naturally, however I've noticed that station preference 1 button is a bit of a reach for the thumb.

Week 4 post

went to the workshop thursday at 9am only to find it closed... and it was closed on friday too ;(
tried cutting the foam at home with a knife without much success so started building some 3d models to refine the idea.
seeing all the nice models posted here i think the next thing i will do with my piece of foam is try to make it into the one pointed by the arrow.

Radio

Here it is. I was hoping to be able to make another one...

For the fabric half, I've found some material from spotlight but I'm still wondering where I could find 'tougher' material (leather etc.).

Foam model

Hi guys... this is my foam model so far... the revised one will need some work on the lathe because the bottom section need a small indent i suppose you would call it for the tuning mechanism.. hopefully you can get the general idea....

foam model

well heres my foam model, still looking very like a big block of foam. The workshop was closed on Friday, really handy, i didnt want to chance damaging my foam by using the tools i had at home. SO all ive done is drawn out the lines i need to cut along when i get into the workshop. Ive left at least 2mm greater to sand off later.

I'm so sorry!- That was Laura.

Progression Shot

This is my current progression of the radio... its a relitively simplistic shape to model and there use and opperate. I need to create the hole using the drill press and construct and carve the remaining features.

Model Making progress

This is the progress of my model. Still need to sand it down my desired shape and i'm still figuring out how to make the sliding effect. it wil be cut into two halves, and the bottom half will be split into two so that i can add the components of the tuning display etc.
process is fun.

Swivel Radio

I've got to cut this into the four pieces, put them on the tread and attach images of the interfaces.

Stylised Radio

This is my foam model radio which I still have a lot of refining yet to be done. I am quite happy with the overall shape of the radio shell but I'm still working on the ergonomics and how the lay out the intended self explanetory interface also more exploration in the are of how the radio will be mapped using hierarchy of user functions & controls.
All suggestions are welcome

This is the progress of the open view of my radio, which has been turned on the laith.

progress on model

ok so this is just the beginning of my model. i've started bigger then it will end up so i can refine the shape. i need to focus on the feet of the radio, and work out the best/balanced way to shape out the 3 feet.

Inspired by nature (model)

This is my radio design. The model itself is not complete and i still got quiet a bit of work to do ...
this is basically a overall shape, the final model should open up .. (hopefully it will..) , its not perfectly symmetrical. but I had tried my best XD .

Week 4 - First Modeling for my Radio

Hey guys,

As the title describes, here is the First Modeling created for my Radio!

The two black lines are the dividers for the slide rings that are located inside the radio. These slide rings change volume and tuning.

Hope it rock, but if not, Well, let me know because it only the initial stages. Better know now than never!

Andy Wilde

first design

Here is my design I came up with on Tuesday morning, wish I had more time to develop it but I guess thats what being a professional designer is like; working under tight deadlines. Here are some pictures of my model as well, it turned out a little more developed than the sketches because I found alot of the shapes defined themselves and looked better than the drawing. The power button and speaker are on top and the batteries are inserted from underneath. There will be some buttons to adjust radio station and this unit is designed to sit on a desktop.

slight progress on the radio model

this is just a slight example of what the finished product would look like. it still needs to be shaped and smoothed out alot more to create its finished appearence.
hopefully all goes well!!

Model building

I had started to get the form of the unit, but since I wanted to simulate the interface I've designed, I was presented with the challenge of making holes in the top surface to fit dials.

Started carving them out by hand because we thought the drill press would tear up the blue foam...until Mario proved us otherwise as you can see on the scrap piece.

floppy radio

hey guys,
this is my radio foam model. just imagine the whole thing is made of squishy silicone/rubber. its shape is rough. i'll make a number of other models to play around with the shape more and to illustrate it's flexibility.

week 4

this is my first radio model foam which i like it more when its not even cut.
i still have to think how am i going to cut the wavy line in the middle of my radio with a good result coz this one still not what i expect.

Model Progress...

Hey guys, here is my first attempt at my radio.

It's still in progress...need to add a few more details, but you're able to get an idea of its overall shape.

Foam Model

This is the progress of my hanging radio model, still tryin to get the proportions right on all sides, it gets a little tricky,
