Hydropolis, Underwater Hotel at Dubai

Hydropolis, which will open in 2009, is the world's first underwater hotel. Joachim Hauser is the man behind the project.

The architecture in Dubai is beyond man's imagination. There are lots of mega projects that are happening in Dubai such as the first seven star hotel in the world, Burj Al Arab and the tallest building in Earth, Burj Dubai. And now, Hydropolis. It is one of the project which will change people perception about hotel. It is not a simply a project, but it is a passion.

Blossom Pendant

Hey guys,
I love this design not only because of it's organic lines and pop colours but also that it plays with light and shadow. This creating a larger then presence illumination in interior environments. I also love the patterns within the form and the effect of multiples creating a feature in a space.

enjoy.

Tadao Ando

I found this in some research I did earlier in the year. This guy designs these incredibly minimalistic buildings almost solely out of concrete, but using the way that light interacts with the spaces to make it interesting.
This picture is of a church he did, where behind the alter there is a cross shaped window. The building is orientated so that at their normal morning mass time, the sun lines up with the cross, creating the glowing/illuminated cross. I'm not religous, but this caught my eye and I thought is was pretty cool. And I didn't want to put another car up here...

Hema website

Hey! what's up?

I wanted to show you guys this nifty website my dad found from a design firm of sorts in the Netherlands.
The website isn't in English so you can't understand any of the written stuff. And it doesn't matter! - why? because design is a form of communication which can be free of linguistic limitations.

Another reason why I wanted to show you this website is because it helps give the products the most important trait you can find in any product, personality.

A product void of personality is just a white good, you receive little emotional response from it and the product fades away into the background.

Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione

Yep I've posted another car, and I am surprised no one has posted it yet. Designed by Wolfgang Josef Egger, it's the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione, which is possibly the most beautiful car ever made/designed. It isnt an innovative car in anyway, or does it attempt to be green and eco friendly, but just look at it!

Cheers! Prost! Aheim! Salute!: My bottle collection

Ok so I thought I would post something that I own, because being a poor little uni student, it's difficult to purchase the latest designer products. For some reason I started to collect glass bottles and have been quite serious about it during this year (how dorky is that?), I think it comes from my dad because he collects things he never uses "one man's junk is another man's treasure".

I love the forms and detail you can achieve with glass, it's one of those materials that will not go out of fashion but not being highly environmentally friendly in the context of efficiency (glass is not a very good insulator thus needing the use of heating devices to climatize a building) I maybe wrong in a architectural way.

Picture description from left: Sprite, Alhumbra 1925 beer, Ramune Peach soft drink, Coca-Cola, Lucky beer. My favourite in operation is the Ramune Peach bottle, its cap is literally a glass ball (check out: http://youtube.com/watch?v=D8GKsWgh7zI&feature=related thanks to aussied for posting the vid), shape wise I think the buddha themed Lucky beer is awesome crazy. Yes I'm an alcoholic...kidding or am I? Muhahaha!

Concept Bike, Third place in International Bicycle Design Competition

Just thought i would upload this image of a concept bike that recently won third prize at the international bicycle design competition that was held in Taiwan. It was created by Frag Woodall from UTS in Sydney. I grabbed the image from the most recent design quarterly magazine. I think it is a pretty cool design. Enjoy.

Portable Bike rack

Found this while browsing Core77.com and thought it was pretty cool, a clever alternative to the normal bike racks, this one supposedly makes it harder for your bike to get stolen. The bike rack is an innovative simple solution to a problem, also a bit of a space saver.
The design itself is minimal but the shape and the way it wraps around and conforms to the shape of the bike makes it a fairly effective design.

Kana Todaka's Desk

Hey Guys...moving away from the cars, this is a desk designed by Kana Todaka, which was showcased in VIVID. VIVID-Vibrant Visions in Design- is an exhibition held for young designers around Australia...and is currently at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre if anyone wants to check it out.

Anywho, this desk caught my eye with the simplicity of the overall design. It's a simple, stand alone item, combining two everyday objects (ie. a desk/table and a chair) into a funky piece of furniture. It seems to be moulded to imitate natural elements- it reminds me of an ice cube,
especially through the use of the smooth white finish.

Chichen Itza

I took this picture several years ago when I was visiting Mexico. This
photo of Chichen Itza is interesting to me, because of its cultural
history and use of architecture. It amazes me how this building was built
hundreds of years ago with none of the tools or machines that we use
nowadays. I also find this photo interesting because when I went back to
Mexico this year, I was told that people are no longer able to climb to
the top of this building, as it was closed off two years ago.

Interior

This is an interior decorated by Jean-Louis Deniot of an apartment in Paris. I love the whole apartment because of the way the colours and patterns are repeated through wall coverings, floor covering, lamps… everything without looking like they are 'repeated'. It also merges contemporary and older deco style pieces seamlessly. I choose this image in particular because I think it's amazing how the textures are so different and dramatic but are sit so well together. And the way the same fabric is used on the walls and the couch but it actually looks good.

Laura Beaumont

Snap and Dine

This design caught my eye when going through the 100% Design London exhibition highlights in DQ magazine (vol28) due to its quirky nature and its "eco" tag (i couldn't find more information on this but i imagine the plastic is recycled). The UK designer, Demelza Hill,  aimed to "reinforce the correct use of cutlery, which has been lost over time" and "raise the standards of current eating on the go habits." I find the contradiction between tacky disposable take away cutlery and the formal dining setting inspiring since it is not often that one sees designers reinventing single use items. Although this peice is obviously commentary on lowering social standards due to conveniance and not a practical design solution, to me this piece is an example of the positive effect that strategic mainstream design can have on society .

Pininfarina Sintesi

Pininfarina are without a doubt one of the most legendary automotive design houses in the world. It's projects like this that affirm this. The Sintesi means Synthesis in italian and is a concept car for the future. It features a host of innovative technologies that make it safer, and more environmental. It uses a Hydrogen fuel engine, for zero emissions, and has what they call 'Clancast' system. Basically a system that allows it to communicate with other cars sharing information on road condition and hazards ahead, similar to the system GM had developed.
Most importantly, the shape. The flowing lines and sleek curves, communicates fluid motion. It all makes it look so dynamic and elegant. Also cool is the glowing white dashboard design, and the way the scissor doors open forwards for the front ones but backwards with the rear doors, for easy passenger access.
Makes me wish I was Italian.

Lexus Nuaero

Yes, i know, another car but i thought the Lexus Nuaero design by Swedish designer Jon Radbrink was impressive. Inspired by architecture and aerodynamics, Rabrink has used 'contasting geometric surfaces against organic volumes' for a unique build - in other words, the flat parallel sides of the car contrast the flowing or organic volumes/surfaces of the front and rear of the car. I like this car because its very dramatic and original. From the side the car almst looks two dimensional. Because the car is so aerodynamic it is also more ecoloicaly efficient, which is deffinately a good thing.

I appreciated the design even more when i saw it on Yoube: http://youtube.com/watch?v=ykZPuWYG70Q

btw the drawing of the car is mine... and my names Dom lol sorry about that

Sell your car for just $40 at CarPoint.com.au It's simple!

This is a sketch of a concept car for Audi; I did this drawing this afternoon using grey lead, pen and Copic Markers. What I find draws me about this sketch is the sleek lines and angles that the car embodies. The design of the rims just seems to sum up the lines and the shape of the car nicely. The gleam (or pigeon poo) could have been done better but there's always next time.

My Civic

Hey everyone,
Sorry to put another car on this blog, but i had to show everyone my ride.
Why is my car cool?? Firstly its a custom colour (both body and rimes) so it is unique. Its got 17 inch bronze rims, which is lowered on king springs. I have put a full body kit on it, which is an origional honda kit, straight from honda. I also recently installed a catback exhaust, and put eye lids on which is not in this picture. Moving onto the interior. I have a panasonic head unit, and the car is decked out with JL speakers, with JL splits at the front and JL 6x9s at the rear, which is powered by a four way JL amp. As seen in the last picture I have two 12 inch pioneer subwoofers, which are 1000w each, and they are powered by a fusion monoblock amp. Well thats basically it. Keep an eye (or an ear) out for me.

EFIJY

I thought i should keep the car theme rolling with this one.
Nothing cooler than bringing back the classics. Its called
"EFIJY", its a few years old now i know but still great.
Designed and built in Oz, under Chief Designer Richard Ferlazzo
It was based on the iconic FJ holden built back in the 50's.
It puts out similar power to the V8 supercars with its
480-kilowatt, supercharged six-litre V8. Other features
include airadjustable shock absorbers through the touch
control LCD screen and fan-cooled LED headlamps.
so to sum up. Super cool!

Solo F1 Car

I found this sculpture of a Formula 1 racing car when i was at the 2007 Melbourne Formula 1 Grandprix. I think it is cool because the artist has constructed the car mostly out of Solo aluminium drinking cans while retaining almost the exact same size and design of a real Formula 1 car. It also thought it was a very clever way of promoting the product "Solo" at the Formula 1 Grandprix because it captured the interest of F1 spectators like me walking around the track and enjoying the day.

Tesla Roadster

I thought i'd throw in this image of the new Tesla Roadster developed by Tesla Motors. The reason why this car is great is that it is one of the first electric cars that doesnt look a rechargable battery pack with wheels (ie Prius hybrid etc...), its looks awseome and in fact is more than just a great design visually.

The car runs 100% on electricity, revs to 13,000rpm and accelerates to 100km/h in 3.9 seconds! And the best part in terms of sustainablity and economy is it does all this for around 2 cent per mile. Its all due to lightweight carbon fibre body parts and efficient electric engine which gives it an excellent power to weight ratio.

Now how cool is that.

back to the future

the reason i chose this image was because the new nike hyperdunks look a lot like the shoes Micheal J Fox wares in back to the future. the shoe incorporates a very "old school" design in material but has a very distinct modern shape, however it is missing glow in the dark lights and an automatic strap that fastens itself when the shoe is worn.

I think this picture or concept is cool. I like the body language of the car.
it's a pretty slick design but not a fan of the rims design. The fact that it
is a Peugeot concept impressed me because haven't seen a good design
from Peugeot to date.

HEART photography exhibition

Image: http://www.abc.net.au/local/stories/2008/07/04/2294935.htm

This image is from an exhibition in northcote which i think is pretty cool. it's a series of photographs taken by mainly teenagers who had previously been caught up in the justice system, and are now on the path to rebuiling their lives. alongside each real-life photo is a short biography which describes each person's troubled past and they struggles they currently face, trying to overcome the negative image held against them. i like the exhibition mainly because of how candid and honest it is---the stories are really captivating, and i like the fact that you get to know a bit about the artist behind the work :)

Volkswagon Kombi

The volkswagon kombi is an absolute classic. I chose this particular car purely on the basis that it is vintage and timeless. Its box shape, with somewhat little tyres, gives it character, making it look rather buggish like it sister the volkswagon beetle. Its windscreen, unconventional as it may be (being able to be opened) also adds to the fun loving character of the car. The kombi is known to some as 'the forerunner of modern cargo and passanger vans'. These cars may be old however you cant help but look at them when they pass you by on the road...

the bicycle kitchen -Los Angeles

i decided to post this pic for two reasons.. firstly because i couldn't work out whether this was a tool/shadow board or an art piece, which was intriguing (: .. also because i then found that the picture was the wall of 'the bicycle kitchen' in the US where people volunteer to teach bicycle users how to fix their own bikes (which is cool in itself). the wall i really liked,. it is quite an aesthetic though cluttered organisation system which is hard to intentionally create! and the brightness of the red with the dull/ worn tool colours seems to make the chaos subtler.

Water Cube

I think the new Beijing aquatic centre is cool... Not only is the design innovative, dramtic, and exciting, the building is also environmentally friendly using solar energy to heat it's pools. The detail on the outside of the building was based on the natural formation of bubbles, which lights up with many bright colours. The scheme and design formation that was developed in Australia has added a touch of magic to Beijing.

TOMS shoes

These are TOMS Shoes...for every pair of shoes that TOMS sells they give a pair to a child in need. So, not only are these really cute shoes that come in all sorts of patterns and colours for men, women and kiddies but they are also a great example of the way fashion can have a conscience!!

The "i Bar"

This is an interactive bar counter. A touch screen coupled with video projectors act to sense and display items on the counter. I think its cool because although touch screens have been integrated into so many appliances i hadn't seen them integrated into a bar counter before.

a cool video of the counter in action can be seen here.

this studio does mainly advertising work and cover art for video games. i'm not sure what the client or purpose of this illustration was, but i like it nonetheless because it has some very interesting design elements in the machines yet they somehow fit the scene quite naturally.

Lamborghini Reventón

its the latest model lamborghini which will cost one million euro so you better get in fast because only 20 were made. The main reason why i picked this car is one because i love cars and two because of its unique shape. The creators took the body of the Murcielago LP640 and re-invented the shape. I love the fact that it (not like many other cars these days) takes a more jagged, angular and more rugged looking approach to the final design rather than creating something that is quite smooth and bubble shaped.

Eiffel Tower

Took this photo while in Paris and thought it would be cool to take this vertical shot from the 2nd level before going to the top. Kinda gives a scary, surreel view of the famously shaped architecture of the Eiffel Tower. Kinda makes you wonder if its just been taken while clinging on to the side.

Moving skyscraper

This skyscraper that is to be built in Dubai and finished around 2010 has 80 floors which all rotate independantly. I think this concept is amazing. If you dont like your view just say so(voice activated) and the landscape changes. As well as an interesting concept, the design incorporates wind turbines between the floors which power the rotation, the apartments and even feed excess power into the grid. sustainability and a great concept.

Alfa 166

Since everyone in my class will probably have to suffer having me talk about it, thought I'd put up my car.

Its an Alfa Romeo 166, designed by a team headed by Walter De Silva, however this example is also fitted with a Zender body styling kit.

While not the most practical vehicle, this car's styling, inside and out, form a large part of what makes it special to me.

Overall, the exterior is loosely wedge shaped. This, before the details are taken in, is intended to convey to the viewer a feeling of sportiness and to be honest, in such a large saloon car that is rather strange, although it fits in with Alfa Romeo's design rationale.

The details in my opinion are what makes this design special. I love the way light comes of the scalloped sides and the way the scallops rise in and out around the wheelarches. I also love the way the inner edges of the headlights are dictated by the bonnet shut line, which in turn outlines the base of the side window opening. The chrome highlights throughout the exterior are subtle but lend an air of luxury - the chrome door handles, and roof gutter strips, could have easily been made out of black plastic at a saving to the company.

So this is a design that is made by its details.

Marshall.

Cameron Putter

Okay, not many people would find this cool, but I do and let me tell you, if it wasn't for this exceptionally well-designed piece of equipment, the putting experience could never be as enjoyable. The scotty cameron newport studio style putter combines a sleek, elegant and everlasting design with the finest stainless steels and precision material technology, to give golfers added control and confidence. Unlike the other inferior putters the cameron is fitted with a pure high grade machined insert of German stainless steel into its milled face which provides soft feel and responsive touch. There is not much room for extravagant design, however I beleive that the flowing lines on the putter head and curved neck help to relax the golfer's frame of mind and promote the required flowing stroke.
