heres one of the concepts ive come up with for my back pain measurement/management so far. Its made from a soft stretchable fabric that wraps around the users waist below their oblique muscles (lump muscle on waist line) to prevent it slipping up. It has a venting system to stop it heating the person up to much and an adjustable velcro strap to hold it on.
The drive behind this concept is to provide a wearable device that counts the time in a still posture. It is important to change posture regulary when seated, so ive designed has a small pad at the back which rests against the bottom of the user's spine. When the person moves, the pad is pushed up and down by the spine and skin, reseting the timer. If they are still for a long period the device will then vibrate lightly alerting the user to adjust posture.
The time allowed by the alerting timer can be cusomised to suit the user s condition. They will first measure how long it takes for pain to occur in a static posture, then feed the data into the timer so in the future it will prevent them from holding posture too long and causing stiffness and/or damage.

Andrew, this is coming together well. I'm a little concerned about the user configuration - although you're thinking about this which is great, you'll have to make it really easy for the configuration process to be performed.
The image shows a good, wearable measuring device.

Oh, I forgot to say, it would be a good idea to research some medical products to see how they attach to people - clever ways of dealing with skin irritations, sweat etc.

Hey Andrew
Early bird post ;) from what I read here I think you have chosen pain as title (correct me if I’m wrong)... I’ve chosen sleep/concentration and I came across a set of predefined rules from the AASM (American Academy of Sleep Medicine) that lay down the brick works for the interfaces related to measuring equipments that attach to patients in clinics (mainly sleep clinics). Although your waist band idea is practical as is you might want to search some info on the new approaches mentioned in the guideline (it might help).
Anyway buddy great work, see ya in class

Hey ANDY!
I love this idea. i think it would work great on me for example due to my lowsy posture when im sitting. however do you think that its not better for the body to have a straight posture the whole time rather then varying it every so often. i can understand the thinking here that movement would alloow the body to stay loose rather then becoming stiff from the once position however i was always taught to keep the back straight the whole time and just get up n move around every so often. But this is a cool idea, just a little more refinement would make it really gr8!

this is a really cool idea that heaps of people could use...have you looked into the different shapes that might be needed by men and women and whether the product could be used when the user is sleeping?
