a musical concept

Hey everyone, in case you are wondering why a random pic of a hand on keyboard was on last weeks blog that was my fault :P i did something wrong with the email and my post didn't go up properly so here is my idea and also a concept sketch....

My idea for the project:
- A device that measures your accuracy of playing songs on Keyboard and/or other musical instruments

As a keyboard player myself sometimes I wish I had a device to tell me if I am playing in time or not. I use a metronome whilst playing however sometimes it can be hard to tell if I am playing in time or not and at the same time read the music properly and hit the right notes. It would be cool to have a device that can give the player a measured rating of how well they played a particular song. It will be a helpful learning tool for students while practicing at home without their teacher there to tell them if they played in time properly or not.

How this idea will work:
Input: you type in the tempo and time signature of the music and the microphone records the song as you play.
Result: when you play it records the audio, converts to digital, and then it will quantize the audio to your set tempo and time signature and then give you a grading of how well you did.

My first concept sketch:

I was thinking of shapes to do with music and thought the treble clef would be a cool shape to start with so i came up with this idea.

Hey Marisa
The idea about how it will work is plausible and very clever, Shaping the device around a musical theme is also a nice idea. However the treble clef i believe is a little too complex of a shape,do you think it might be best to simplify it a bit.
Nice work

hi Marisa, this is a really interesting idea. i just bought a piano yesterday so i'm like.. wow i need one of these! it looks good as a small piece, to be able too hold it and place it where you are playing. maybe it could be mountable to the music stand for convenience? i like the shape but yes it is quite complex. depending on materials though it could look good with that detailing. cant wait to see your final stuff (:

hey thanks for the comments :)

-Kyle, I just came up wit the treble clef as a starting point so yeah i am thinking of trying some other music notes to make it more simple
-Phoebe, i am thinking of a clip so it can be used on the music stand of the keyboard i am also thinking velcro as an option but yeah i'm still developing ideas

Marisa, a neat idea as discussed. Think carefully about the form - keyboard, upright piano, grand? All these sitations would be appropriate uses. Look at other aesthetics in music/audio and also, some variations in how it reports to the user should be explored.

Also, is this something I look at during the piece, or afterwards?
