my shower water wastage measurer

yo,

so ive come up with several ideas on how i am going to monitor / alert
people in the shower of how much water they are using. this idea
involves a device attached to the actual shower head in which a dye is
added to the water flow after a certain pre determined amount of water
has passed through. Or, alternatively, the temperature of the water
could be dropped gradually until it's freezing cold, promoting the
person to take a quicker shower!

Just a thought regarding actually colouring the water.. You would have trouble with people with allergies to the colouring agents as well as possibly people getting annoyed when they get out of the show coloured red. However it would be an effective way to stop them from doing it again.. An interesting thought. Maybe you could incorporate bright LED's into your design instead of the colouring, that way it would give the appearance of the colour and would be as noticable yet would not have the adverse effects possibly associated with the colouring. looking good so far. keep it up.

i was just thinking maybe instead of the water going cold maybe the device can effect the water pressure/flow somehow?

Hey luke great idea however like nick said it could pose a problem to the user. Also the die could run out and if i owned the object i wouldnt go out of my way to refill the die. Nicks idea of using LEDs is i think a better way of going about with regards to warning the user that they have used the shower for too long. Im sure you will come up with something even cooler than leds.

Yo Luke.
U reckon you could incorporate a way to tell you exactly how much hot water you're using, based on flow rate and the hot/cold ratio. There's nothing worse than getting into the shower, stripping down and hopping in only to be blasted by ice water because some idiot likes really hot showers.

Your post mainly talked about aleart methods - but how is it actually measuring?

Good idea about the LEDs, colouring the water by other means, less annoying but still clear communication.
