Week 2 Sketch...

This is a rough sketch of the transformation of my favorite design piece, the BenQ-Siemens Snake Phone. The snake design is extremely simple but very attractive. I specially like the curves and the structure of the spiral, keeping in mind it could have been done in so many other ways. The mobile and its inspired radio can wrap around the arm (or even the leg) of the user. My interpretation is also capable of sitting upright on a table. (Photoshop + freehand sketch)

Wow! Are you able to manually 'bend' the device to change its form? It appears to be portable and perhaps wraps around the users fore-arm which is great for ergonomics and usability. Perhaps have the speakers on the outside though so the sound is preojected away from the device rather than into the user's arm...? Cool idea man. -Luke

This is a neat idea - I like that the flexible nature makes it versatile.

I'm concerned about the speaker - remember the brief asks us to house the given components. Although there is scope to change the circuit board, the speaker needs to have the thickness shown in the post from week 1. Speakers are a little flexible in size - from circle to a rounded square or rectangle, but you've got to keep the size (area) the same.

Follow this up - I think you can fit the internals and still have a killer shape.

the idea of the radio wrapping around the users' arm is really cool...maybe you could add some kind of grip or texture to the inside to make sure it doesn't slip or rub as the person moves. nice drawing too!! - grace

Thanks for the comments. As far as the bend goes I hadn’t thought of a “manual bend” but it’s nice to explore! The speaker I though of was capable of transmitting sound to both the outer environment and the inside of the spiral though the out lets on both sides of the snake (for both applications of portable and stationary). Robbie you are absolutely right about the brief and the speaker size but I drew this as a form study without considering the restrictions of this brief. The fact that you actually follow the designs on the blog is inspiring and motivating, thanks for that. Last but not least to answer grace, the inner material is definitely different from the outer shell as shown in the beautiful SIEMENS design, my illustration was poor in demonstrating this – as it was not descriptive enough to show the multiple speaker outlets either. Luke, Robbie and Grace thanks again as I really appreciate as much constructive criticism as I can get on all my designs/sketches.
