A fresh take on the old, outdated speaker shape!

When I was designing the transistor radio with the old speaker, I thought the shape really had no room for improvements. Here is the portable speaker concept design which I thought was interesting and relative to what we are doing here! Philips Design received around 17 awards within six categories of the 2007 IFDA.

Refinement

Hi Everyone, nice work today in class. Yes, it was a difficult decision
for some, but I hope you feel satisfied with the results.

So. Refinement. What you should do now is re-read the whole brief,
because you will now see things a little differently. Refinement is the
next stage in product design where you have got a direction, and need to
make it _work._

If it has moving parts, how do they operate, fit together, etc. How does
the user control the radio? How big are those speakers really? How small
is that button?

Refinement is more detailed, and is where the product really starts to
take shape. A concept is an idea, now we make it a product.

The other task, as discussed in class today, is to draw a plan of how
you are going to make this in the workshop. This is really important
because it gives you a starting point when you get in there.

As you model, the design will evolve - just like it did on paper. This
is a natural part of the design process and is the great thing about
foam modelling - that things look differently in 3D, held in your hands.

I'm looking forward to this week's drawings and comments too - keep it up.

hey guys, this is really awesome. i saw a documentary on sbs with a guy from puerto rico, (or somewhere like that) who was doing the same thing. the cops pulled up and told him off for graffitiing, but he was just like "im not, im just cleaning". hehe. anyway, he would wipe the soot off the tunnel walls with a cloth, then gather the soot at the end of the day, mix it with an acrylic base, and then paint with it again, it a sort of weird "recycling pollution" system. anyway, thought it was cool, pushing the boundaries of graffiti/street art and making people think about how dirty our world has become with pollution.

twist design

this design was inspired by modern technology and the appearence of mobile phones at the moment. i wanted the design to relate and appeal to a younger audience. its rotations are a volume control and like i-pods it can be recharged via a computer or electrical plug provided it has the right connection.

this design is inspired by nature (flower). Basically it opens up with speakers on each side and the center core is a control panel, where you can change the station / volume.
its portable when it is closed up making it user friendly and compact.

Here's my sketch for week 2. It simply shows the volume function
for the concept. Basicly the cut out grooves change shape and form
as the volume is increased or decreased through the twisting of
the upper and lower levels.

still can't get over my first concept, figure i should do the design some justice before i can let it go so modeled it out. still just a cylinder after all... please excuse the poor texture, didn't have time to get it right.

this is the second concept i came up with. thinking about a way to neatly store away the speakers when not needed, and utilizing the versatile shape of a cylinder. the speakers are stored away within the cylinder in a clean seamless form, but rotate out and upwards when needed. on the top is a tweeter and below in the bottom facing the table/floor/whatever the radio is sitting on, is the woofer. so it provides the full range of sound. the top part of the cylinder has an exterior ring which rotates around the entire thing, which allows for the frequency tuning.

i've yet to work out exactly where to put the on/off, am/fm, volume functions, and where to put a small digital display for showing the current tuned frequency and other relevant data. the exterior is made from brushed aluminium.

corner radio

rough sketch. it's built to be a corner radio with an adhesive so you can attach it anywhere (corners, ceilings etc). speakers are present in the curve and the functions can be placed on the top or bottom of the semi-circle. tuner is yet to be decided on whether it should be manually handled or electronic. other then that, it's designed to be a subtle object so it fits and blends nicely in your corner, complimenting all of its surrounding objects.

The idea behind these sketches is a radio where the outer covering consists of fabrics and textiles. This hopefully results in a radio that is warmer and more personal than traditional radios made out of metal and plastics. There is also an element of customisability with the outer covering; in graphics, materials and colours to further emphasize the personal aspect of the radio. It will be a slightly more expensive radio ($80?) that is made to last. It is aimed at those living in or around cities who listen to the radio while walking.

Radio Concepts

I took a photo of a page with 2 of my concepts, so I might as well explain both. Even though the bottom one is the main concept that I have been working with.
 
So the bottom concept is a radio that can be used outdoors and inside. Its speakers are positioned at the front, and are located more towards the inside of the radio to protect them from rain and stuff. The volume and tuner are controlled using touch sensitive slider bar things on the sides of the radio, and there is a display / bar that runs along the top of the radio that displays the station and volume. The radio also has a handle so it is easy to carry around. I have drawn the radio a bit to long, so just imagine it a bit shorter and thats what it supposed to be like.
 
The top concept is purely sculptural and doesnt really do much in terms of innovation or anything. Its just made to look nice and unique, but it does project sound in all directions unlike my other concept.

Camping/Hiking Radio

Hey guys,
So these are some of my sketches of my developing radio. I looked at camping and outdoor activities such as hiking. The idea behind this radio is the atmosphere of camping; sitting around the camp fire during the night, outdoor activities (hiking) during the day. this solar powered radio creates a social aspect to the walk (instead of people singularly listening to their personal players), can be used in emergencies (such as bush fire updates on AM) solar charges during the day so as night falls you can remove from your pack and enjoy all night. What do you think??

Porsche Design Studio...

I came across these two designs from Porsche and thought I should share:

Radio vase

From the outside this is a vase, but it opens out to a radio. The outside
would be elaborate art nuvo style engraving in a bronze finish while the
inside is minimal. The outside's classical appearance contrasts with the
contemporary feel when it's opened out. The flower's are contained in two
cavities in the top- there are several solutions to this but I like this
one as it repeats the form when it's opened, just as the speaker, (on the
left), and the tuner, (on the right), do. This radio would be more
expensive then most; around $80-$100 but it's not really a practical
object, more a curious sculptural type of object.

Radio concept 1!

Hi Guys,

 

Attached above is my first concept design for my radio. Its purposely not in perspective because it is to be designed slightly off skew. The blue bars are touch sensitive and change to volume and tuner. The figure 8 shapes are buttons for the Am/Fm channel, the panel is a screen and the little holes in the top are for the speaker the dimension roughly for the radio are 100 X 100 X 100mm.

Another concept design

This is another concept im working on at the moment. This again is very form based. It is a cylinder with a 360 degree screen running around it, and the rest is metal mesh to give the illusion of a total speaker. To tune / change volume you turn the top knob. Thats basically it. Simple, yet effective i hope.

Okay, so here is a concept im currently working on. Aimed for indoor use, ive focused more on the form rather than the function of the radio. The curve of the central section contains the digital display and the three primary buttons; on/off, tuner, volume control. The radio has dual speakers, allowing for better clarity.

The concept on the left i find the most appealing of my initial sketches.. i have attempted to simplify the interface to the point of having only one piece/area of interface.. the scan quality could be better but hopefully you can get the basic idea.. it is desgined for the older demographic(grandparents). it is also a stationary design which will sit on a table or shelf. it needs some work tho so suggestions are quite welcome...

Shower Radio

This is just a really basic pen sketch of my shower radio idea. I am just experimenting with ideas on how to mount the radio in the shower to stop it from falling. I'm also thinking about placing the controls under the radio to avoid them getting wet.

Radio COncept

so this is one of my designs. I largely based it to be functional. It is able to stand in a variety of ways while still confortably fitting in a pocket to be listened to on the move. It incorporates a sliding mechanism to protect the tunning screen and keep it compact. At this moment the tunning and volume dials are on the sides and are fairly standard. any ideas how i could make these more interesting while keeping the design easy to use and compact?

Design Sketches Week 2

This is one of my concepts i'm now working on. I love the idea of a radio that has form as its main feature and the function secondary. Thus more of a sculpture that will sit in ones living room or bedroom as an addition to the feel and style of the room. Hence with this concept i have worked with the idea of shape and form alot. For this concept i got inspiration from how you can wrap a straight object around in on itself, like a snap ruler for example. This concept will look as if it is unbalanced and about to fall over but thanks to some nice weighting within the base will defy gravity to some extent. Also the casing for the entire piece will be made from stainless steel mesh to give to illusion of an all-round speaker yet in reality both speakers and tuners and everything else will be place inside. Still in the process of working out display / function issues with buttons or screens or stuff like that. I love the idea of a minimal design so i was thinking very little feature buttons or screens, but any advice or ideas would be great. Peace

Favourite idea

This is my favourite idea so far, The Main shape has been inspired by a guitar pick, in the curved cornered triangle style. Being in the pocket all the time as its being a portable device needs to be easy to change station/volume, The main scrolling style knob on the front will be for tuning as in the pocket the forefinger can easily scroll up n down and the volume will be at the back sot eh thumg can easily change that. Still a few things to be thought out but looks promising so far.

Radio Concept

This is so far my preferred concept, it features a colour changing, water proof, matt translucent plastic casing and "hidden" LCDs in the handles. the handles act as adjusters for volume and tuning. 0 volume = off. the base is heavy so does not tilt when adjusting with one hand. the speaker is mounted beneath. this radio is designed as a desktop radio to use in kitchens, workshops, studios and generally messy or wet areas or when the operators hands may be unclean (can be easily cleaned without risk of damage. the rough cost of the radio would be $30 since it is made relatively inexpensive components and does not require especially complicated production processes.

A RAD REVOLVING REVOLUTION.....?

Hey guys, this is probably my most promising concept so far. I wanted to design a radio for a teenage market, that was compact and portable for its users and also employed an enjoyable and innovative function. The addictive "pen clicking" action gave me the idea, because its almost instinctive and keeps peoples minds occupied. As you can see there is a central AM/FM band wrapped around the centre of the radio. By rotating the left part of the radio and holding the right stationary the band is pushed to AM or FM frequency and tuning can commence. I was thinking that maybe instead of having the station displayed on a seperated screen, that the AM/FM band could be the LCD display instead?? As for volume control I'm not really sure but I don't really want volume control to simply be revolving another ring or part of the radio though, anyway what do you guys think?

First off thanks to Nivea for those inspirational words. Secondly here is my radio idea.

When told to take a new direction in class I went for an outdoor theme. I started to do the abstract forms that you see with that octopus-like arms and the sun centre surrounded by a cloud and then i realized that the tentacle speakers was a rediculous idea, took a pandadol and was done with it.

I began to play with the idea of plants since it was outdoor themed, smart eh? I drew a sunflower with the speaker as the flower centre, whilst the speaker cabling runs throught the stem and into the pot which has all the electronics. I played around with the speaker face and had an idea for the petals to close inwards to protect it from the harsh elements i.e. your sister soaking you with the garden house because you were being a smart arse.

I then did a sketch of a far simpler, almost minimalist design of the radio, incorporating the petal idea previously mentioned. It has a large trapezium shaped speaker in the first idea and triangular in the second, LCD display and different tuning knobs on both designs.

Anyways I better get going as I'm going to go to Southland and play videogames before work, yes what a sad and simple life I live *fake cries, "I want my mummy", *drinking vodka from the bottle*, etc

bedside radio

this is another version of my radio which i decide to make to be put in the table side of your bed.
it can show time and the date as well.
the speaker are put in both side and all buttons are inside.
when you want to open it, it has to be push just like the alarm clock which usually put in the table just beside the bed.
so as soon as you wake up you can directly hear the radio station that you like.

My Radio Concept

This concept is aimed at producing both a functional and aesthetic alternative to a portable and stationary transistor radio, the features of the radio include a 360 revolving speaker which is aimed at specifying the trajectory of the sound waves for stationary use. The controls on the radio include a sliding control which operates both volume and frequency (a separate switch specifies the actions of the sliding control being TUNE/VOL/HOLD). The radio also comes with a head phone jack for its portable use.
