Drowsiness in Drivers - Final Concept

hi Guys,

Through consultation with the class i felt this was the direction to go in.

Quick explanation of the device - Intended to measure and warn drivers of fatigue which could dangerously impair their driving abilities. Through some research on experiments conducted testing fatigue and drowsiness in drivers, it was found that the best indication of a driver about to fall asleep was the persons amount of blinks imediately before falling asleep. Basically the best measure of when a person or driver is about to fall asleep is the amount of blinks per minute increase and the time between blinks decreases.

How to measure amount of blinks? - My original idea was to a device which contained electrodes which were placed near the eye which measures the muscle contractions. However through more research i found another way using infrared light.  A sensor bounces an infra red beam to the eye & back. When the eyelid moves this beam is broken. The amount and time between is converted to digital information in the device and the driver is warned by a red glow on the surface. The red glow could flash as well to signify urgency and an increasing sense of danger.

There a few problems that need to be sorted, such as how to keep the light fixed on the driver eye,  SO  i would really appreciate and ideas, comments and suggestions...thanks.

it's a great idea to have your device situated in the car, i think thats really cool. But is there anyway that the device can sit off the sun visor? The visors can be distracting if they have mirrors on them and if the suns not out they might block your vision a bit. is there any where else it could sit? really cool idea though!

Hi,
The device is good in the car, you might want to design the device that you can also take it off the car as well.I just wonder if the distance is far away to measure the driver?Overall,I like the concept!!All the best!

hi kyle!
the idea is great, is it completely eyelevel with the user though? maybe experiment with diff places like the windscreen, steering wheel etc.
just a thought :)
