came across this company that does a fancy manufacturing process called stereolithography which could be the future of manufacturing and one day safe us from modelmaking =P .

Aah, but if you are "saved" from model making, you'll also be "saved" from learning about materials and processes in a hands-on environment.
My advice - learn to love making things yourself. Designers may well use rapid prototyping from time to time, but their design decisions are based on real experience in the workshop, getting their hands dirty!
