Measurement-Personal pressure

Hi, this is my first concept. I want to measure personal pressure-closeness to 'Limit'. This is how I come up with the shape of my device.  It is mainly glass. It has a "Squeeze"control and a reset button on the side. I was thinking about it would be better if the reset button is at the top-so you can reset it in any direction. In the morning, if you feel like you have lot of things going on, you just need to give it a big squeeze. You'll see some bubbles freely flowing around inside the device. Which means you still can relax a bit-not too much pressure going on. The device will eventually fill with lots of bubbles. The red light will be on when it can't take it anymore-to the "limit". It is just like an asthma attack or clogged arteries-when the air/blood can't flow through.

Device

The device I've designed measures body rate (heart beat, pulse, temperature) to detect if attraction, Vibe, Truth.
As a single person going out to a club, bar, party or just out in general meeting someone can be quiet the challenge. Most single people going out in search to meet someone or hook up lack confidence or can be cautious because one doesn't know if they someone is attracted to you or feel the same way. Single people need the device to give them that little extra confidence, eliminate some of that guess work, get the ball rolling so you can move on to step two. Once you have picked something up on the radar, someone who seems like a possible candidate it is time to go talk to the person or dance with them. The device continues to guide you as you approach it can detect the loss of interest or the increase in interest. Once you take the leap of faith, conversation can be the next tricky step but with the device as your wing man you can determine weather the subject is still interested, if they are lying when you ask them if they are single nothing worse then the jealous boyfriend or girlfriend.
The belt concept been one of the ways my device could work.

concept 1

hey guys

My theme is stress. so the idea behind this is that the user wears the glove which measures their pulse and skin resistivity, both of which are commonly used as stress indicators. The glove will then either change colour or a small screen will change colour and display a short phrase communicating that the user is too stressed to be productive (i have to check out what technology exists for this). can't wait to hear your thoughts and ideas!

Concept: How well can you hear?

Supz guys.

well this is my concept idea for my measuring device, which basically measures "how well you can hear". The device it self can be divided into two separate parts. Part A is basically a device that measures your hearing by sending different notes/ signals of sounds to your ear, then it will ask you a set of questions based on the sound you've heard, and then according to your answer the device then calculate your Hearing Age "H.A" from 1 - 80~!
Its kinda like the Brain Age game on DS ~! making it fun and playable, rather then just a boring device that tests your hearing.

Part B is a portable device that you can then dis attach from the main controller (Part A) once it had customized your hearing age according to "your" personal setting and hearing. This device can be attached onto Ipod or other Mp3 players, which will alarm or help you to adjust the sound volume on your portable music device. This device will also allow you to measure sounds around you, and will alarm you based on your personal hearing if the sounds around you are harmful to your ear / hearing.

cheerz.

time management device

hi everyone,
this is my time management device. basically this device is helping people to manage their timetable.
so the user can just put the activities that they have and the due date for it.
the device will also give a couple of question in and prioritize the user activities.
it will project the activities by chart, icon for each activities or percentage, etc.
with different colours and image that the users wish.
the device is divided in 2 parts the right part can be move and it is used for projecting the keyboard.
the left part can show the chart or diagram, etc.
it has a clock function as well and it can be a camera.

this is a device that easy to carry around and with a different approach and technology used it will make people more interested and willing to play or interact with the device.

Concept 1: Stress Measurer

Hey Guys. Ok so i have decided to go with a stress device as my measurement product. This will incorperate two individual measurement values in order to come up with an accurate reading for ones stress level. The will include an heart rate monitor or E.C.G. (Ecocardigraph) located at the thumb (represented by the heart in the sketch) which will pick up the pulse in the thumb and produce a reading. The other measurement will be moisture content which will incorperate a vapo-meter. This determines the amount of perspiration of the body in the hand region and will then be transmitted with the E.C.G. to bring about an overall measurement for ones stress levels. Sorry these are not rendered versions, however i think it is best to get the idea across first before thinking about colour. The handle has also been developed for an ergonomic grip and feel for user-friendliness.

"Good, good, good vibrations, I'm talking about good vibrations" - Beach Boys

Hi all

So after speaking with Robbie, where he clarified the input/output part of the assignment I have chosen a clearer path. Before I had ideas to use vocal, lights and vibration to stimulate the consumer to concentrate at the task at hand. The vocal aspect was going to be dealt with a voice recognition software, where a small microphone within the wristband device would receive human inputs e.g. "I'm annoyed at this work!" then the wristband would respond with a pre recorded message depending on the level of concentration. It may suggest to "take a break" or "focus". Yet once discussed it was clear that part of the measurement theme was lost because the device would act on the measurements not the consumer (the device tells you to take a break instead of you realizing based on the measurements that it's time for a break). So I have decided to drop the voice recognition idea.

I will focus on lights and vibrations. I could have a device that display the concentration levels in colours as mentioned last week in my other blog entry, red being the lowest concentration, blue the highest. So after time and concentration loss, your levels will be shown from blue and morph into red. Once red is shown a central circular light will flash, to warn the consumer of the very low concentration levels. Then it is up to them to decide what to do with this information.

I will combine a sensor, like those used in step-o-metres, to record movements. The more you move the higher concentration and vice versa.

I was also thinking to combine the lights with a vibration system that once the lowest level of concentration (red light) is activated, vibrations would 'awaken' the consumer.

The device will be worn on the wrist (if your doing work, reading, typing etc.) on your ankle or leg (if your exercising, to stimulate you to train harder) and around your waist with a belt where the device clips on (if you are sitting and you begin to slouch and lie down, will go through procedure to 'awaken' you)

I hope that is clear enough to understand!

Have fun peeps

- Chris

Concept 1!

Hey Guys,
heres one of the concepts ive come up with for my back pain measurement/management so far. Its made from a soft stretchable fabric that wraps around the users waist below their oblique muscles (lump muscle on waist line) to prevent it slipping up. It has a venting system to stop it heating the person up to much and an adjustable velcro strap to hold it on.

The drive behind this concept is to provide a wearable device that counts the time in a still posture. It is important to change posture regulary when seated, so ive designed has a small pad at the back which rests against the bottom of the user's spine. When the person moves, the pad is pushed up and down by the spine and skin, reseting the timer. If they are still for a long period the device will then vibrate lightly alerting the user to adjust posture.

The time allowed by the alerting timer can be cusomised to suit the user s condition. They will first measure how long it takes for pain to occur in a static posture, then feed the data into the timer so in the future it will prevent them from holding posture too long and causing stiffness and/or damage.

Realllly cool stuff~~!!! although it isn't related to our current project "measurement" but i was thinking this might be relevant for "us" industrial design students .

Breakdown for Wk 9 Concept Pin-Up

So next week you're required to present 3 (min) concepts around your chosen theme. As the requirement for this project is A3, I would expect as a minimum 3x A3 pages of work.

But what's on the pages?

-Renderings of your concepts, showing them from different angles to build a complete picture of your proposal. As I said in class, hand drawings please. Don't stress about the rendering, just add some interest with markers or other media to make your images interesting and informative.

-Annotation telling everyone how it works

-An introduction to your theme - this might be verbal - you need to tell your audience in 20seconds what you are measuring, and why this would be useful.

The aim of pinning up three concepts is so that we can select one for further work, a decision which will be made by you, your colleagues and me.

Any questions? Post as comments and I'll take a look.

Looking forward to next week, and your sketch posts this week. (Yes Jamie, I really am...)

Extremely late post

Sorry my post is so late iv been extremely sick and pretty much in bed all of last week.

For my Measurement Project i have decided to explore how to maintain the correct level of hydration within ones body. Water is one of our most important resources and is important that hydration is maintained purely through water with some exceptions (electrolytes) rather than soft drink and juice. The product could also be considered in the sporting industry where athletes can benefit from quick and easy to read important information about their hydration levels, changing the way the prepare and regulate water intake before, during and after sport. This could also benefit tourists who have not experienced extremely hot and humid conditions, who are unaware that they lose a lot more water through sweat, making them aware that they are losing water fast, which in turn can have prevent fainting, nausea, headaches and dizziness.

What i am measuring is the percentage of water per unit of blood which can be derived from a number of tests. The target audience can potentially be athletes, tourists as well as outdoor people who enjoy bush walking ect, however it has the potential to be bought by the average joe due to its health benefits.

Week 8

Can you believe it's week 8 already? Today's colour is in celebration of spring. I like spring.

The blog posts last week were great, I'm glad you were thinking about your projects, looks like we're making progress.

This week is all about concept development - some of you might be sketching, others researching, maybe still deciding. That's ok, but today's objective is for everyone to be well on the way with an idea.

I've got heaps of work to hand back as well, with marks, and some general comments to go over in class.

So all in all, a busy day! Looking forward to it

Measurement

Hey, so my internet hates the blog and fianlly decided to work today. My direction is to use sleepiness as my subject. I want to go with a more comical idea. I want to measure peoples yawns or something along those lines and it will indicate to the person how much sleep they need to overcome their current sleepiness etc. need to think it out more.

heyyyy

know i'm fairly late, but thought i'd post up the design direction i'm taking for the second project.
as of right now, i'm looking at designing a time-management device. (go figure!)
one of the main hurdles is to actually manage time, without a host of electronics / software to do it for you. however, using mechanical means to measure/manage available time would generally require time to set up... a bit counter-intuitive.
hmmm, more ideation.

-kai

yeah, it's late...

Internet was down at home, but I'm not back in Melbourne so here it is.

My idea was for a system that could measure a persons capability to drive. By this I mean not their driving skill, so to say, but rather if their ability to drive is being hindered by fatigue, substances, etc. It would compute values from multiple inputs (body temp, heart rate, substances in perspiration, variances in grip pressure on wheel and rapid eye movement). At the moment I'm thinking that the value would be displayed in the means of a visual scale of some sort, probably using a coloured light source in an in-dash display (ie green is good & red is bad to simplify things).

Campbell

Fatigue

I'm measuring fatigue. My idea atm is to measure it in comparison to a normal person. not really sure where i'm heading, but i'm thinking of something like a device which vibrates/beeps every few hours (depending on the level of activity) to notify the user to take a 10 minute break.
So that's my idea for this week. and I know, late post but what the heck.

-Annie

Thoughts

Basicly my idea for the measurement brief is to measure the possible consintration levels in the surrounding environment so it would measur things like, light, sound distractions, smell, air quality etc.

Measurement Brief

My idea is not yet defined fully, in fact it has taken me quite awhile to get my head around my initial thoughts.... Sustainability is my topic I'm thinking of applying a measurement to, its either sustainability or durability I'm under sided and the functionality and purpose needs to be look at more closely.... My aim is to develop a product that measures other products and offers assistance where needed.... So when looking at sustainability in transport, fuel source, material, wear and tear (moving components), cost, damage to the environment, etc all need to be considered.

Concept idea

hey guys i know it is very late but we have been having a few problems with the computer so actually on friends at the moment.
anyways my idea for an unconventional measuring unit is HUNGER haha

everyone gets hungry but it is the mental or physical factor which counts. i mean how many times have you eaten or wanted to purely on the basis that your bored?? i also chose this topic because of the health effects on your life if you dont eat well and because australia has recently become the most 'obese' country in the world.

so my aim is to design an easily portable, compact little machine that warns you if you are not specifically hungry and why you are hungry whether it be a mental or physical reason. i think it would also be helpful if the machine tells you to a degree how much will satisfy your craving or hunger.
so yeh there is my idea
if you have any suggestions let me know yeh??
thanks

-georgia

late late late

I know I know, I got home later than expected, but here are my thoughts anyway:

I could measure time...wasted. I'm sure we all procrastinate and waste our precious waking moments from time to time. I was thinking of a device which can politely ask us to get back to work after a certain amount of time wasted. The language used in its prompts could then become not so polite as time goes by.

Obvious users are students and...anybody who needs to get work done but can't be bothered to do it.
