Just few sketches from last week, not fully developed tho.

this is one idea i have developed its sort of "duke box" with a pop up lcd screen which displays all of the information necessary to use the radio. i have played with incorporating all of the buttons and knobs in one centre piece on the device rather than scattered all over it.

Thought I'd join in on this late-night shindig before I go to bed.
Anywho, I chose this sketch because its reasonably loose and still communicates form.
However, it doesn't show how the design works too well, a few directional arrows etc should help out...
(Marker was added to highlight and separate this sketch from the others.)

=?UNKNOWN?Q?Runner=92s?= Radio: Favourite Idea Sketch, Week II

I hate having to pocket or strap my iPod or MP3 player when running or exercising because it creates a weight imbalance on my body. This runner's radio is gripped in the hand whilst running, really making it easier to run with such a device. It can also substitute runner's hand weights, (mostly used by girls) as a lead core matches the weight resistance required during exercise. It's shock, water and heat resistant, fitted out with a heart rate monitor and in combination with a near identical unit, in the opposite hand can be configured to deliver left-right sound ouput, lol, plus even hand-hand weight distribution. Sizing is tight, a suitable size just fits into the envelop (if the unit is rotated on a 45) so i hope that's alright. PCB no. 2 just fits the grip diameter. I'm thinking of introducing finger castings into the moulded back component thus enhancing ergonomics and also have contemplated introducing a squeezable water compartment to quench thirst. Got inspiration from a crushed can/drinking bottle. The circular pattern on the grip is a soft rubber type material which can be squeezed when you start feeling the pain. Ha ha!

Chocolate!

Some aspects of Luke's design were interesting and inspired me to do this interpretation of his concept. I don't mind the fact that there is no room for the big old speaker in my design as I'm just playing around with forms; plus none of the modern gadgets and gizmos use them anymore. This is a twist radio with the diameter of roughly a white board marker (length of 100-150). The volume and fine tune controls twist the same way you unwrap caramel candy rolls! I'm also thinking about a docking mechanism for a multi component entertainment system where each component (ie. Radio) could be snapped off and used independently. Sort of like a chocolate block with CD, DVD, Radio, Speakers and so forth as the small blocks.

this is the initial piece of a concept that came from the sculpture shown last studio (sphere out of cube). i like the idea of the radio not being visually intrusive when it is not in use hence the radio switching on only when all the speakers are extruded. the right hand speaker would also be the 'control'.. using regular turning and pushing motions.

this is me just thinking on paper... i'm reckoning a bit of surf board radio action could be pretty sweet, can't really think of too much to go with in terms of shape, it's gotta be pretty simple, strong, waterproof, i guess user friendliness is the most important... i'll just try and stylise it a bit now, maybe a bit of branding aswell...

Week 2 sketch

This is one of my sketches exploring some possible forms for a portable radio device. The shape is similar to a watch but attaches just behind the wrist a bit like a flexible bangle. I'm trying to figure out how to incorpate all the internals but still keep a nice flowing form.
At the moment the speaker is inset at the top with a round LCD screen wrapping around it with a clear plastic ring that protects it. My idea is to incorpate lighting into this ring to make the selection of radio stations quicker and more interactive.

week 2 radio sketch

After our brainstorming session i decided to look at the environment or context that a radio might be used in. There seems to be a lack of portable radios that can be used in bathrooms, kitchens, workshops, etc. that aren't of the 'novel' variety. I tried to create a radio that wasn't so noticeable (i.e not a blue and yellow fish) and could be used in these environments.

Week 2 Sketch...

This is a rough sketch of the transformation of my favorite design piece, the BenQ-Siemens Snake Phone. The snake design is extremely simple but very attractive. I specially like the curves and the structure of the spiral, keeping in mind it could have been done in so many other ways. The mobile and its inspired radio can wrap around the arm (or even the leg) of the user. My interpretation is also capable of sitting upright on a table. (Photoshop + freehand sketch)

Slinkee

Had this kind of cool idea for my radio being a slinkee for the speakers. This would hopefully allow the radio to extend beyond a single purpose being either a 'stationary' or 'portable' radio. Collapsable speakers would not remove the speaker entirely but rather allow the unit to evolve into a portable, hand held radio which can be easily slipt into a bag, or coat pocket. When extended it would suit any kitchen benchtop or bedside radio.

Sliding Function

This is one of my concepts utilising a 'sliding' mechanism to pull/
push the ends of the radio in and out to adjust both the volume and
frequency.
The concept is symmetrical and thus evokes balance (apart from the
left centered speaker).
I would like to incorporate certain functions of this concept into
further designs.

Monash's Global Rankings...

Monash Uni ranked 105 on a global scale as the second best university in Australia. ANU (Australian National University) is the only Australian university in the top 100 (position 47). Although there are many parameters in defining top universities and there are different methodologies in creating such tables, one fact remains the same and that is the global dominance of US universities (see pie chart). In other surveys conducted by other institutions, Monash University even came as high as 32nd position (with ANU being 26th).

Hey guys,
Originally I planned to post a picture of a cool concept car... but it seems like it has already been done. So instead I'm posting a picture that was in National Geographic magazine. I think the photo is cool because it sorta tricks you and it is only after a bit of thought that you realise that the picture is taken from a birds eye view and the images of camels that can be seen are really the shadows of the camels.
